About area code 04
An 04 number is the area code followed by seven digits, written 04 xxx xxxx, or +64 4 xxx xxxx from overseas. Open numbering data links the 04 ranges to Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Paraparaumu on the Kāpiti Coast. Like other landline numbers, an 04 number can be kept when the customer changes provider, so the original network says little about who supplies the line now.
Genuine 04 calls come from government departments, ministries and Crown agencies, councils, hospitals, universities, banks and businesses. Because so many official bodies use 04 numbers, a call that seems to come from the capital can look trustworthy. That is exactly why it is worth checking who is really calling before you act.
Scammers can fake a real Wellington number. In August 2024 the National Cyber Security Centre warned that scam callers were showing its incidents line, (04) 498 7654, as their caller ID, and said it does not generally make unsolicited calls from that number. Its advice was not to answer or call back such calls, and not to act on any instructions if you do answer.
If a caller asks for money, passwords, PINs or one-time codes, hang up and contact the organisation yourself, using a number from its official website, a bill or your card. Forward scam texts free of charge to 7726, report scams to Netsafe or the National Cyber Security Centre, and if you lost money call your bank straight away. The operator shows which provider the number range was originally allocated to.
