About area code 07

An 07 number is the area code followed by eight digits, written 07 3xxx xxxx. In the ACMA numbering plan, 07 is the code for the North East Region, which is Queensland. The first digits of the local number identify the charging district. Brisbane numbers usually start with 2 or 3 after the code, Toowoomba numbers with 45 or 46, Townsville numbers with 44 or 47 and Cairns numbers with 40 or 42. From a Queensland landline you can leave out the 07 when you dial another 07 number.

Queensland landline numbers are portable, so a business can change provider and keep its 07 number. The network that first held the range is therefore no guide to the caller’s current provider. The number is not a reliable guide to location either, because a geographic number can be used with an internet phone service at a flexible location, and staff working from home often show their office number when they call.

Expected 07 calls come from Queensland government departments, hospitals and clinics, schools and universities, councils, banks and insurers, real estate agents and tradespeople, as well as call centres that handle customer service for companies across Australia. A genuine caller can tell you why they are calling, refers to something you recognise and does not object when you say you will call back on the organisation’s official number.

Scammers also use 07 numbers, or make it look as if they do. One common script claims to be from nbn and threatens to disconnect your internet within a day or two, often with a recording that asks you to press 1 to speak to a technician. The ACMA says NBN Co and Telstra never cold-call about a problem with your service or ask for access to your computer. Another claims your number has been used unusually and will be cancelled. Both want you to stay on the line and hand over details, so the safest response is to hang up.

If an 07 number calls about a payment, a refund or your accounts, end the call and contact the organisation using details from its website, app or a recent bill. Telstra lists a request for passwords, PINs or one-time codes as a sign of a scam call. Report scam calls to Scamwatch, tell your bank at once if you shared card or account details, and use ReportCyber for cybercrime. Check the number here first to see whether others have had the same call.

Operators in the Brisbane and Queensland area

The operator shows which provider the number range was originally allocated to under the Australian numbering plan. The number may have been ported to another network since, so treat this as the origin of the range, not as the customer’s current provider.
